Purpose of Job

Maintains the equestrian multi-purpose arena and surrounding paddocks within the Park at Harlinsdale Farm and athletic fields on park property. Work involves planning and executing the day-to-day plans for the athletic sports fields, including pre and post set-up for equestrian events and special events on the site. Includes renovation projects performed within the framework of good turf management practices. May include some work within barns on the site for equestrian activities. Must be able to work weekends, holidays and nights as part of the regular scheduled work week when events are planned on the property. May be required to work tournaments with the athletic division if requested at other sports complexes within the parks systems.

Essential Job Duties

Turf & Equestrian maintenance

  • Properly manages and maintains turf on all athletic fields within the Parks and Recreation Department grounds.
  • Mows, trims, edges, fertilizes, sods, aerates and irrigates turf using commercial grade equipment.
  • Maintain equestrian arena flooring and paddocks to standards of multiple disciplines and special event set-up.
  • Maintains, repairs and installs irrigation systems on athletic fields.
  • Paints arena walls, barns and fencing.
  • Performs general maintenance as necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition.
  • Performs special projects on turf as needed during off-season.
  • Operates spray/spreader equipment needed in the application of various herbicides. 

Arena, Paddock(s) & Infield maintenance

  • Properly maintains the arena, paddocks and fields within the Parks and Recreation Department grounds.
  • Drags, rakes, conditions, and replenishes materials as needed to maintain infields.
  • Builds and maintains all equestrian flooring within the site and other field necessities.
  • Performs general maintenance as necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition.
  • Performs special projects on athletics sports fields as needed during off-season.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through obtaining an associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Certifications/Licenses: A Tennessee Department of Agriculture Certified Pesticide Applicators License for C03 is required for this job. (Must be obtained within 6 months)
